DEVOLUTION OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT IN KENYA TO ENHANCE COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: AN ASSESSMENT OF KENYAN LEGAL FRAMEWORKS, Wamukoya, D. (2013) University of Nairobi LLM

Devolution of Wildlife Management in KenyaWildlife management in Kenya has generally been undertaken by the state on behalf of the Kenyan people. The Constitution encourages public participation in the management of the environment.  It also provides for national values and principles of governance in Kenya, including devolution and public participation. Kenya’s Environmental Management and Coordination Act defines the term ‘environmental element’ to include wildlife.

My thesis studies the practical application of the national values and principles of devolution and public participation.  This is because they are some of the ways of enhancing community participation in wildlife management. It further assesses the problem of centralization of wildlife management in Kenya and the adequacy of the legal frameworks to encourage community participation through devolution.
